Important Game Setup Manual!

(taken from the txt file on the game folder)

1) Installation

Please change the Windows system locale to Japanese. This process can be reverted at any time and will not have any permenent effect on your system.

The process is different for each OS and can be found online but this is the way that I believe works for Windows 7/8

Instructions for changing Japanese locale (Windows 7/8)

  • 1- Open Region and Language by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Clock, Language, and Region, and then clicking Region and Language.
  • 2- Click the Formats tab, and then, in the Format list, select the "Japanese" locale to use for the display of the date, time, currency, and measurements. (Double Check your OS date and time - it should be displayed in the Japanese format and your filename paths should contain a Yen sign in place of a \)
  • 3- Click on Regional and Language Options
  • 4- Click the Administrative tab, go to "Language for non-Unicode Programs", and select "Japanese (Japan)" from the drop-down menu.

Alternate method for a Windows 8 system

  • 1- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run box
  • 2- Type Control, click OK
  • 3- Select Clock, Language, and Region, then select Region
  • 4- In the Format field on the Formats tab, select Japanese
  • 5- On the Location tab, select Japan for the Current location
  • 6- On the Administrative tab, select Change system locale and select Japanese for the Current
  • 7- Click OK, then reboot the computer to save changes if needed.

All steps should be done before the files are unzipped. These are important steps, even the date/time one and the engine will crash with a RunTime error if they are not done.

There should be several folders named with Japanese characters. If you see files with gibberish squares or symbols, please reboot your computer after changing to Japanese locale and unzip the files again.

In addition, please use a program such as Winrar or 7zip with innate Japanese file name support, not Windows built-in unzipper. Make sure the folder structure is maintained and do not shift folders around as the location of files/folders is important.

Please Install both Visual Basic 5 runtime libraries for the engine in the "Dependencies" folder. Run in Administrator Mode, if required.

The game engine has been confirmed to work with Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 10. It has also been confirmed to work in a VM running Windows XP so that's also a final nuclear option if necessary.

As an alternative method, Locale Emulator has been suggested as a workaround to changing the system locale.

Locale Emulator can be downloaded at - https://github.com/xupefei/Locale-Emulator/releases

  • 1- Run LEInstaller.exe. Install
  • 2- Run LEGui.exe, I didn't need to change any settings.
  • 3- To start the game, Right click SRC.exe, select Run as Japanese (Adminstrator) in the context menu

Personally, I would only suggest this particular method as the last resort if you are unable to get the others to work. However, this method is considered very successful in getting the program to run on many computers.

2) Running the game

To start a new game, run SRC.exe in the Game folder, browse to the SRW DB folder and select "Start.eve" when prompted. By default, the program displays ".src" (save files) to load, so you may have to change the displayable file type to "eve"

To load a save game, run SRC.exe and select the ".src" that you wish to load.

3) Controls

Left Click on a unit to perform actions. Right click on a unit for Weapons information.

Right Click when not hovering on a unit for general commands (such as ending turn)

By holding down right-click, you can speed up story and conversation scenes.
